Oman electricity output grows as water production declines

    October 12, 2026

MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s total electricity production rose 4.3% year on year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. Output stood at 35,935.3 GWh during the same period of 2025. Preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information showed growth across several governorates. The increase added about 1,546.5 GWh to national production over the first eight months of the year. August production reached 5,743.9 GWh, compared with 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate recorded the fastest growth in total electricity production, with output rising 204.8% from a year earlier. Al Dakhiliyah followed with growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta posted an 8.4% increase. Production across North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah rose 5.5%. Dhofar also recorded growth, with electricity production increasing 4.6% during the January to August period. The figures showed expansion across most of the areas covered by the national data.

North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah moved in the opposite direction, with combined electricity production falling 16.4%. Musandam recorded 376.0 GWh, showing no meaningful change from the comparable period of 2025. The regional figures showed wide differences in electricity production growth across the Sultanate of Oman during the reporting period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified the figures as preliminary. The data cover electricity output through the end of August 2026.

    Net electricity production rises 4.6%

Oman’s net electricity production increased 4.6% through August to 36,463.9 GWh, compared with 34,871.8 GWh a year earlier. The measure includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led the growth rates, with net production rising 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar posted gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Net output therefore increased by about 1,592.1 GWh year on year.

Net electricity production across North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah increased 5.4% from the previous year. North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah recorded a 16.6% decline in net output. Musandam reported 368.0 GWh of net electricity production, with the annual change rate at 0.0%. The governorate-level figures broadly followed the pattern seen in total electricity production. National net output remained above its level in the first eight months of 2025.

    Water production declines across Oman

Oman’s water production fell 3.5% through August 2026, reaching 330.65 million cubic metres. Production totaled about 342.71 million cubic metres during the same eight months of 2025. Muscat recorded a 6.2% decline to about 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Water production across other governorates fell 3.4% to about 149.90 million cubic metres. Those areas produced about 155.19 million cubic metres during the comparable period last year.

Dhofar was the main exception to the national decline in water output. The governorate produced about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, up 3.4% from about 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest utility data therefore showed different national trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. Electricity production increased at both total and net levels. Overall water production, however, remained below its level in the comparable period of 2025.
